and the continuing news out of newtown connecticut tonight as well as some other important politics, news that is not related to what happened in newtown. the brand new senator elect is chris murphy. the mayor of newark, new jersey is going to be joining us in just a moment. as is the police chief from oak creek wisconsin where that mass shooting occurred this past august. that is all coming up this hour. but, in order to understand one important element of the response to newtown, in order to try to get a handle on the range of possible outcomes here, as we try to make decisions as a country as to whether we are going to change as a country because of this massacre and because of the national heartbreak it has caused, to try to get at that very big question, there is a very narrow discussion to be had about a piece of new technology. this is something called a 3d printer. anybody can become a small-scale manufacturer of anything. all you have to do is down load a computer file or create a computer file that has the specifications for the shape of a thing that you would like to build. you

you're looking live at the auditorium at the newtown high school. about 900 people fit and an overflow in the gym of 1300 and staff and students of sandy hook elementary are actually in the crowd and they're wearing green and white ribbons. the town's and the school's colors with a small angel in the middle of them. we're told that this service will be delayed a bit because the president is still meeting with these family members and classrooms at the high school. and he's taking his time with these families in individual classrooms. we don't have a start time yet. it could be possibly at the bottom of the hour. we don't know as of yet. they'll give us the best cues they can, but he is meeting with these-- with these families one by one and also meeting with first responders. and picking up on what charles said. >> yeah, i mean, i was just going to point out when you talk about, you know, heroes and human moments and the stories that we've heard about these teachers over the course of the last 24 hours. >> the principal and-- >> the principal. >> the psychiatrist. >> and losing their l

to changing gun laws now in the wake of this latest massacre in newtown connecticut, with 26 people being dead and the big majority of nra members in favor of at least starter reforms to our gun laws, the biggest barrier to reforming our laws now may just be the pervasive common wisdom that it's not even worth it to try. modern history defies that common wisdom. but it persists. it persists, maybe. now, the last time we talked on the show about the long, long and long lost modern history and bipart san gun reforms was in the wake of the tucson shooting this past weekend. and in the wake of that shooting, the tucson shooting, this was the general assessment. gun control dead. a nonstarter. shootings unlikely to change laws. don't expect any changes. that was our random survey of the headlines last january after the tucson shootings. at least if you asked the beltway shooting gods. now it seems like the common wisdom may be less certain. look at the headlines now. and it's more like this. debate on gun control is revived. lawmakers call for tougher gun laws in wake of new town massacre. gun cont

shooting right now. >>> good morning, everyone. i'm john berman. we're in newtown, connecticut, this morning. >> i'm kate bolduan. you're watching our continuing coverage. it feels like we've been here a long time just trying to figure out what's going on with the story. president obama will be coming here later today and meet with some of the victims' families and we're told he will speak at a vigil being held tonight. meanwhile, the community is grieving. we saw more vigils here last night really moving vigils. 20 children and 6 adults died in friday's shooting inside sandy hook elementary. we should begin hearing the first funeral plans for some of the victims very soon. we also want to pass this along. the united way has set up a sandy hook school fund. donations, as you can see right there on your screen, donations sent to the newtown savings bank 39 main street right here in newtown, connecticut. this fund will be used to help pay for the funerals of the victims, john. >>> police say they have found important evidence during their searches at the school and at the shooter

enough, surely is enough. and we're coming from newtown, connecticut, a town that for a week now has felt much longer than seven days has been heavy under grief and also full of love and full of resolve to remember the lives cut far too short. we wanted to come back to newtown tonight not to argue or point fingers but to honor and to remember the 12 little girls, the eight little boys, six dedicated women who died at sandy hook elementary school one week ago today. today here in newtown at 9:30 in the morning bells rang out for each of those lives lost, the mothers and the daughters, the sons and the nieces and the nephews and the brothers and the sisters and the friends. we will remember them. as well as you might imagine. this is newtown, connecticut, for folks who are not familiar. this town is roughly about 27,000, 28,000 folks who live there. i live roughly 15, 20 minutes away from newtown, connecticut. it's a very small town, and this is one of those stories that affects you in a very personal -- even if you don't have children, for instance, one of our directors who works here at msnbc, i just saw him before i came out here. he was rushing home. he has a daughter who goes to this school, thankfully, according to his wife, his daughter is okay. he has talked to a number of parents who have children in this school who have described in vivid detail what transpired there some hours ago. some of the stories we are going to hear play out here over the mechanics few hours, but according to him, according to the director, one of the things that happened inside that school based on conversations that he had with his wife, at one point when the shooting started there were a number of adults in that building, presumably 250e67ers, but a number of adults who managed somehow to b

, unfortunately, unfolding in connecticut right now. in newtown, connecticut, at a small elementary school. the sandy hook elementary school. for those of you who are just tuning in, we are now getting numbers, our own john king reporting, quoting law enforcement sources as saying at least 20, but perhaps closer to 30 individuals, many of them children, have been killed in this incident. individual suspect, a 20-year-old, is -- the suspect, the shooter is a 20-year-old. law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation telling our susan candiotti, that suspect, we believe, is dead right now. you just heard police at a small briefing, didn't provide a lot of information, but they did tell us the area now appears to be secure, but this has been a horrific, horrific mass killing at an elementary school in connecticut. a school for kids from kindergarten through fourth grade. we're watching all of this unfold. lisa procachini is on the phone right now. she's a parent of an 8-year-old at the school, the sandy hook elementary school. your 8-year-old is fine, i take it, lisa. tell us w
